One Person Factory
Hi there,
I’m Iris, the one-person factory behind everything you get from blob.says.hello.
I started making jewelry for myself and friends after graduate school as a way to heal, nurture my being, and as a practice of meditation. In some frozen moments in time, the first several blobs were made and widely loved. From there, everything started to roll.
I found that thinking wasn’t always helpful. Instead, I started making and creating, leaving thinking and synthesizing for later. Two weeks later, I registered with a company that could help me maintain my visa status and picked the name blob.says.hello. There were other options like blobby blobs, blooooob, blobblobblob, etc. I found myself spending an unnecessary amount of energy on deciding the name, which created stress and anxiety. So, the day after, I sat down and decided that today was the day to pick a name. I’d been posting blobs for a while, and I always added ‘hello’ to the posts, so blob.says.hello just made sense.
Once the name was decided, I had to create a website and branding assets. I’d spent most of graduate school mastering the art of getting it done, rather than getting it perfect, and I thought this project would be a perfect chance to put that into practice. But creative decision fatigue kicked in, and I learned that it’s often better to stop and come back to it. I went through around four rounds of design, spending a week just to decide on the fonts. Then, I tested several versions of business cards. I printed them, cut them, and laminated them with colorful cardstock paper. A few weeks later, I settled on the square ones and had no intention of updating them again. I designed and hand-cut every single one of the thank you cards, and every time the slicing knife went down, I felt thankful and enjoyed the process.
One motto for this project is to do the best work with the least amount of friction and effort. Efficiency, functionality, and cost come first when finding a packaging solution, with no compromise on aesthetics. Stamps are used for most of the packaging.
Caught up in all the tasks, I found it fun to switch between them because creative energy and focus have a limited reserve each day. Changing tasks helps and makes the day more enjoyable.
It took me a while to start writing this blob, but once you start, you just keep going! Thanks for being part of this journey with me. Iris. 01.03.2025
